We like deadlines: there are 42 days to go until the UNISDR Global Platform in Geneva, where we formally initiate the Icebreaker One discussion.

Last week we:

  1. launched this icebreakerone.org website
  2. planned out a workshop for 10th April – see below
  3. thought more about how to visually describe the project

We’ve had a lot of questions about, for example, if we are creating a new taxonomy (no), competing with existing risk modelling vendors (no), or acting as a new data aggregator (also no).
Hopefully this image above will help.

ACTIONS — how you can help

1. Share: help reach practitioners on social media or email

Are you (or someone you know) working in: environmental risk modelling, insurance,  reinsurance, data licensing, GIS, infrastructure, financing, disaster risk reduction? Help us get the word out.

Copy/paste/share at will:

2. Workshop — April 10th (London) — attend or recommend someone

We are hosting a half-day workshop in London to explore and articulate user needs, use-cases, challenges and opportunities.

Join us to shape how open standards and data sharing commitments could enable new collaborations, markets and projects that better align the work of policy makers, infrastructure investors, insurers and disaster and risk management professionals.

We are bringing together professionals with experience in:

  • Data standards
  • Risk modelling
  • Designing economic instruments
  • Finance and insurance industry data
  • Infrastructure projects
  • Geospatial data

Outline agenda

09:00 – 09:30 – Introductions and setting the scene
09:30 – 10:15 – Understanding the users: who needs risk information?
10:15 – 10:45 – Potential products: what technical & financial products should be created to meet these needs?
10:45 – 11:30 – Data landscapes and marketplaces:what is needed to connect data and models with the places where they are needed?
11:30 – 12:00 – Prioritisation: which levers of change are most important to pull?

Please email gea@dgen.net if you would like to attend, or recommend/forward to someone who you think may benefit from being part of the process.
